Great Benenden Bake-Off Back to archive
27th April 2017

Teams of parents and daughters battled it out under the watchful eye of chef Marcus Wareing as he judged the Great Benenden Bake-Off on Sunday.

The event was part of the Benenden Arts Festival, which took place over the weekend. It saw 16 teams – each made up of a daughter and a parent (and in one case a grandparent) – competing in a marquee on the School grounds across two different sessions.

Mr Wareing, a judge on MasterChef: The Professionals, kindly volunteered to take responsibility for deciding which two teams were crowned the winners and was on hand throughout to chat and offer plenty of helpful tips to the contestants. Benenden’s own Deputy Head Academic, Lesley Tyler, kept the sizeable crowd entertained by acting as compère for both sessions.

In the first session the teams were tasked with producing afternoon tea and in the second session a celebration cake. Teams had 90 minutes to create their masterpiece and were provided with all ingredients, accessories and appliances. Some of the School’s chefs were also on hand to help if the teams ever ran into any tricky moments!

At the end of each session Mr Wareing was joined by Benenden’s Assistant Head of Co-Curricular Matt Commander to taste each creation and decide on the winner.
