The Chaplaincy week at Benenden
The whole School gathers four times a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) at 8.30am. Each day, a different speaker from our community delivers an address on the weekly theme and we often offer a prayer and sing a hymn. We cover a wide range of material including current affairs, world faiths and School events.
There is a service every Sunday evening. Very often, it is a whole-School gathering, but occasionally, only those in School (i.e. not taking an exeat) are required to attend. We follow a termly theme and use Common Worship Evening Prayer. There is a whole-School Eucharist celebrated at least once a term. We also attend the morning service at the village church, St George’s once a term. Parents are warmly invited to attend these services.
There are regular services held in our beautiful Chapel (services of the Word and Eucharists), which are open to anyone. We say Compline every Wednesday evening and finish with a mug of hot chocolate!
‘Bread’ meets at 8.00pm on most Fridays during term, and is Benenden’s main forum for exploring the Christian faith. The meeting is open to all girls, whatever year they are in and of all faiths and none. Following a short talk, there is time for discussion and questions. The group plays games and eats copious amounts of chocolate brownies!
There are two Bible Study groups at Benenden: one for senior students and another for the Lower School. Both groups meet weekly and explore different parts of Scripture following a termly programme.
Girls are usually in the Fifth Form when they are confirmed, although girls may choose to be confirmed at any age. Preparation for Confirmation takes place over the Spring Term, and includes a weekend retreat. The Chaplain leads the preparation classes and is ably assisted by other members of staff. The Anglican confirmation takes place on the second weekend of the Summer Term at St George’s Church, Benenden. Roman Catholic girls join their Anglican contemporaries for all classes, and have some extra classes with the Roman Catholic Priest in Cranbrook prior to the confirmation in St Theodore’s Church in June.
Parents’ Prayer Meetings
Parents are warmly invited to join the Chaplain once a term to have tea and pray for the School; for details of the next meeting please see the Chapel Card.
